It is once again time for the K-12 Art and Verbal Art Contest sponsored by the City of Belen Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Multi-Cultural Commission and the State of New Mexico MLK Jr. Commission. These contests are in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Candlelight Vigil that will be held on January 15, 2024 at 6pm at the Belen Public Library. Winners must attend the Vigil to receive their awards.
MLK, Jr. Art Contest
The Art Contest is open to all Belen Students in all grades. They can create one of the following:
- Create an image of Dr. King
- Create a work of art about what “I have a Dream” means to you
- Create a work of art that represents cultural diversity
The Entry Requirements are:
- Can employ an art medium. i.e. poster, diorama, clay, etc.
- Must use standard poster board for posters
- Do not write name or identifying information any place on your entry.
- Complete the entry form and submit with your entry.
- Winners must attend candlelight vigil on January 15th to receive awards
- Entry deadline is January 10, 2024.
MLK, Jr. Verbal Art Contest
The Verbal Art Contest is open to all Belen Middle and High School Students. They can write, sing, rap, or rhyme about:
- How does Dr. King’s dream tie into what is happening in society today?
- How would your school benefit from understanding and appreciating cultural diversity?
- How does Dr. King’s dream tie into your personal experiences and/or goals?
The Entry Requirements are:
- All written submissions must be typed 12 pt. font or greater, maximum of 500 words.
- Submissions will be judged on clarity, creativity, originality, depth of thought, and significant detail.
- Do not write name or identifying information any place on your entry.
- Complete the entry form and submit it with your entry.
- Winners must attned candlelight vigil on January 15th to receive awards.
- The Entry deadline is January 10, 2024.
